When your child’s birthday lands on or close to Halloween, it is almost inevitable to have a Halloween themed party, or even an “Autumn” themed party. if you have only a few little ones attending, your child will not be overwhelmed. Most often, one year olds are dressed in a little soft pumpkin outfit as their costume…so, I don’t think that will be too much to take in.

One year old parties are really about the parents and the family there, your child will have a wonderful time playing with his little friends in free play activities, eating some cake, and taking it all in. Decorate with orange and black streamers, balloons, and table ware, put on some spooky music. Boo, Cackle, Trick Or Treat is very suitable for this age group.

Perhaps read some Halloween softy books (Where Is Baby’s Pumpkin? is a personal recommendation)to the little ones. It will go off well.

The holiday will not overshadow his birthday celebration. As long as there is cake and balloons, everyone will understand that this is a birthday party, with a Halloween theme. Many kids love the fact that their birthday lands around such a cool holiday as they get older…you will be able to do fabulous parties in future. Yet, sensitivity to “Is this holiday overshadowing the birthday celebration” is quite good, however, as in future times your kid may want to do something totally different off of Halloween and you will be ready for it!

Say It!

  1. Our son was born on Halloween and we didn’t want his first birthday party to scare him. So, we went with the theme “Our Little Pumpkin is Turning One!” and had pumkin plates, a pumpkin cake, cider, etc. We also had a Pumpkin T-shirt made with the number one on the back, a tradition we will continue this year with the number 2. Another tradiion we started is we carved one pumpkin with his age and not a face and used it as the centerpiece. The party was a huge success and there were no tears from him or any of his friends!

  2. Shana – thank you for the tip! My son will be 1 this Halloween, so I’m trying to get some ideas for his party. I love that you carved his ’1′ into the pumpkin! Thanks again!

  3. My daughter was born on October 20th and it turns out that Halloween is my family’s FAVORITE holiday! So, we are going to do a pumpkin patch party for her…lots of fun things created out of gourds and pumpkins that the kids can relate to. We are also going to have some big pumpkins carved with arm & leg holes for the little ones to have photo opportunities :-) I did this with my son who is now 3yrs. old. and it turned out to be one of our favorite pics when he was a baby. They will also get to wear costumes….it’s always fun to put them in their costumes as much as possible….only so small for so long :-)

  4. Thanks so much all for your help. I have been trying to come up with a great idea for my daughters 1st bday. She was actually born on October 31st 08, and I have been thinking about this time off and on since. I dont want her to think she ever missed out because Halloween shadowed it.
    Thanks for the great ideas!!!

  5. There are also pumpkin-shaped and halloween themed moon bouncers that you can rent for your child’s halloween birthday party. At least a halloween birthday isn’t as bad as a christmas birthday! Talk about being overshadowed!

  6. My daughter’s birthday was the week of Easter when she turned one. There was so much going on that we just went with the easy Easter theme. Now she is 3 and I still wish I would have made the day more special by having it stand out from the surrounding holiday. It’s not much work to pick a simple theme. And if the baby is only 1, Halloween doesn’t need to be a big deal anyway.

  11. My twin girls will be 1 this Halloween and I am looking forward to doing so many fun Halloween and non-halloween birthdays in the future (whatever they decide). This year we are just having a few people over, with a mix of halloween, princess and fairy decor. They will have matching “my first birthday” shirts and not costumes for their small party (we are doing the costume/treating thing the friday before at my husband’s office). I am going to keep the frightful decor to the front door, and dress up only to hand out candy. I plan to make them each a large muffin size cupcake instead of a whole cake, and add some halloween and general birthday touches. In the future we can have scary halloween or a themed birthday party and guests can dress accordingly (even a princess party can be a halloween party since many little girls dress as one for their halloween costume :-) I also plan to send out by mail or email, announcements to our friends and family with pictures from their birthday celebration. I love the pumpkin patch idea and look forward doing that with the girls in the future! :-) Happy Halloween and Birthdays!

  12. We also have our daughter’s first birthday close to Halloween (26th). While we are doing pink and cream themed colors, we are adding white pumpkins to bring in the fall theme. Her invitations were the Stevie Streck princess carriage, which is just a pink pumpkin carriage with glitter. That way, we have the pink theme and the pumpkin theme wrapped into one. The kids attending (5) will each take a pumpkin home and will have their name painted on it. I wanted to let them decorate the pumpkin as an activity but it may be a little messy. For her first birthday memorabilia, we are doing a fingerprint tree with pink (girls) and silver (boys) so she will know who attended her party. Kinda a mix of things but I wanted to pull in fall in a not so orange and halloween way (though I LOVE halloween)…good luck to you all and happy birthdays:)
